Rhino Grasshopper Trial

30 Sept 2013

As trial i just simply watch Youtube tutorial and here is the one i follow:

However i think i have not build fully according to the tutorial, therefore i make a mess.

As shown about the structure inside is so complicated, it is hard to find out what is going on and where the error is. The red part only show at the point the function cannot work and that is all you have. Russel said i should place some labels so for everyone no matter is yourself or the one who give you helping hand can spot the error easily.

Thus, i rebuild everything from nothing again.

I can fix come problems, but at the end it still not flatten the output and i am not sure what is going on. I check that my version of Glasshopper is the latest but the one in Youtube is not. I do not know is it a problem too.

Concept

16 Sept 2013

From the quotes of Kate Moss, try to extract the idea from her to a concept. I am not going to argue is it right or wrong for the skinny feels which make a huge discussion  in the public before. I will focus more on " Show inside to outside" as it also is a traditional issue of architecture. What is inside? what is out side.

To fulfill this whaffle structure is always in my mind. I willing to try using Kate Moss body shape as a starting point and generate the house in the concept.

As a concept the draft i draw is just meaningless curves. Russel suggest to use actual body line, so i looking any shape is suitable to make it be come a house. there for i choose Kate Moss's lips. Although you may argue lips cannot show the skinny feels, i think the magic is how skinny feels inside her mind will announce to the world through her mouth/ lips and her idea become outside and create the image of Kate Moss. In which the chimney of the house will link a body shape curve of her and be come icon of the house.

Back to the whaffle structure, it create the shape of the lips, however on the other hand it dun have any cover and it is hardly define the space under the structure is inside or outside.

The actual bed room is just one meter wide which is the skinny feels "inside". Surrounded by semi-transparent glass block door will allow her to show herself at night.

Final model! At the final touch i change how the structure end and make it more natural feel.

Different lighting give different feeling of the house

Using different material to print the roof and facade so distinguish both element. Light from under and show how thin is the slab.

In 1:100 scale

Final model progress

Facade

Once again just try in 1:200 see what is going on and as result the print mad at me...Whole roof are in no support and show above.

Second try is using the support from the makerbot software, however it is weird that make everything become support...

So i just try back to basic and remove the roof and just print the walls only. The result still really good as shown. I started question is the printer print plate is not level? Meanwhile i help other classmate print their files with same printer everything go fine so i just back to sketch-up and check the file...

After a full investigation and find out the model is extremely not water tight and full of very small holes. Some face are not in positive face and inside the wall have internal face in it. (Credit to Isaac) The model start print correctly. However still a bit weird on the other side...

Try putting columns and see is the situation improved but it didn't...so i think is it the scale problem so i just jump to 1:100.

Unexpectedly, due to larger scale the wall have more structure to hold up each layers.

Columns really do the job and give support to the upper structure. And it is easy to remove compare to the support the software have.

Roof

Again the roof. I have re orientate the position to print due to 90 degree turn have less overhang. First test on the left is totally fail as i did not notice one side not even on the ground and it cannot print at the beginning. Second test at the middle using the support method from the software which helping me to know which point actually need the support. At last on the right just using my own little columns.

As in the facade, scale is a big issue. With my own columns support it print well.

Just note that the free standing column i had print this time is touching the limit. The highest column is 8cm and it start fail on its job to support the model during print. Even worst the raft of the column also fail too and ruin the model print. Long story short, columns may not always the method to solve this kind of problem.

Floor slab

In order to make the slab in sharp, large amount of blue foam at the middle need to cut away. However the cutting machine have its limit. Therefore i use drill to drill some bit off...

...and then sand to the shape i want by sand paper.

After fine sanding, is time to join two pieces together. I give more support to the join by adding stamp as attachments. UHU plus PVA are applied to give both short and long term bond.
